The first Italian Theatre Season in London officially opened 19th October, from an idea of Prof. Mariano D’Amora of the Royal Holloway University, at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies with the presence of the Minister Giovanni Brauzzi of the Italian Embassy in London, Antonio Bassolino President of the Regione Campania and David Morante Consul General of the Italian Consulate in London.

The initiative represents a courageous challenge, aiming at getting the British audience closer to the Italian contemporary dramaturgy, here almost unknown, and to the regional nuances and peculiarities of our theatre. Among the others we find, in fact, many authors from Campania like Enzo Moscato, Valeria Parrella, Fortunato Calvino, Roberto de Simone, Manlio Santarelli. In order to overcome the language hurdles the audience will enjoy opera-like surtitles in English, for all the shows, so that also the non-Italians will be able to deeply understand the performances without sacrificing the autochthon characteristics of the original language.

The curtain rising was preceded by a two-day cycle of conferences and seminars, on 19th and 20th October at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, with several professors from Italian universities, authors and actors who gave a comprehensive introduction to the modern and contemporary Italian dramaturgy.

The Italian Theatre Season lies outside the institutional canons, having chosen as its stage the Riverside Studios, polyvalent cultural centre for cinema, dance, theatre and figurative arts well known to the independent circuit in London for its variety and audacity; here, in fact, a day per month until June 2008, the characters of our Italian theatre will tread the boards and be the lymph of this ambitious project.

Sunday 21st October two authors and actors were on stage: the Venetian Paolo Puppa and the Perthenopean Enzo Moscato, with utterly different monologues and rhythms hence mirror of the thousands nuances marking the Italian culture and society. On one hand a more subtle and psychological interpretation of inner and human tragedies, on the other hand a more histrionic and gushing expression of a not less dramatic narration, Paolo Puppa and Enzo Moscato were the stars of the first evening of the season.

The complete schedule with all the next performances until June 2008 is available on the official website:
