Maurizio Pollini is an interpreter who at a first quick glance already transmits all his authority.
The crowded hall, the anticipation atmosphere, and then his way to cross the stage and seat at the piano, as if he was seating at a table to drink a glass of water. And when he starts playing, his absolute control of the instrument is a simple matter of fact, a light halo of science over the elusiveness of music.

Well known for his wide repertoire including classic, romantic and contemporary composers, on the 12th June at the BarbicanCentre Maurizio Pollini presented a programme exemplificative of his experience and inclinations. The first part, dedicated to Frédéric Chopin, saw the great pianist spanning from Prelude in C Sharp Minor Op.45 to Polonaise in A Flat Major Op.53, through ballads, scherzos and nocturnes. The second part was instead completely devoted to Franz Liszt, with Sonata in B Minor, and its part played as a whole continuum, preceded by a series of pieces of the late Liszt.

About one hour and a half of music, plus three encores, and of notes written in the memory and the fingers: with no aid from sheet music at all, our artist captured the audience in the hall with his famous perfection of the performance and enthusiasm and naturalness at the same time. A concert that was the real manifestation of what Maurizio Pollini himself maintains: “expressiveness, spontaneity and intellect belong each other inseparably”.
