If GIORGIOSTUDIO does not go to Siena, Siena must come to GIORGIOSTUDIO. No, no hill has moved for the occasion, but we refer to the female rocker most beloved by the Italians, the Sienese Gianna Nannini, who on the 1st July has literally filled the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
Skinny jeans, boots, tank top and waistcoat (sorry Mrs Kate Moss, you are a bit late…), 51 years old and a shape to be envied by 20-ish girls, Gianna on stage is the incarnation of pure energy. And her audience is worth as much as she is. Stop of the ‘Grazie’ tour, alternating songs from the homonymous album with great hits of her 30-year career, Nannini’s gig was not a simple promotional concert but a proper homage to her fervent fans. Accompanied by the London Session Orchestra conducted by Wil Malone which gave a touch of elegance and intimacy to the overwhelming verve of the show, Gianna comes out with a great voice and charisma, dances, sings, jumps and plays everything, from guitar to violin without forgetting to sit at the piano.
Among the hits of the past, like Fotoromanza, I maschi, Meravigliosa creatura, our rocker did not concede, however, Notti magiche, famous piece written in duet with Edoardo Bennato and theme song of the 1990 FIFA World Cup hosted exactly by Italy, continuously requested and unanimously struck up by the public whenever the chance during the whole concert.
Among the little gems jealously reserved for the encore, instead, there were the English version of the new and successful song Sei nell’anima, and an interpretation for solo voice of ‘O surdato ‘nnammurato closer to that intense and tormenting by Anna Magnani that to the thoughtless rhythms of the folk song which makes Italians so famous abroad, for a greeting and a bow to the Italian spirit and the Italians around the world.
Right these very many Italians were able to drag to the Shepherd’s Bush Empire not few English people among friends, boy/girlfriends or acquaintances.
And at the exit, when the concert was over, we heard a ‘native’ commenting: “Great performance, we’ve loved it!”… something we can be proud of!
