Ludovico Einaudi, at great demand, is back to England. After his show at the end of February – extensively reported on these pages (see START Newsletter – Volume 2, issue 1) − with which the new album “Divenire” was promoted, the composer from Turin returned to the Barbican Centre on 30th March, to which great emphasis was given by both the Italian and English press. He received a very hearty reception, and then one can understand why Einaudi decided to come back to London.
A couple of points to highlight: firstly, the electro-acoustic music by the German Robert Lippok, which reminds a lot the Teutonic Cosmik Music of the 1970s – called vulgarly Kraut Rock – the German answer to the English and Italian Progressive Rock. With Einaudi, it is a filling sound played live; apart from a track where the synthesizer “raised its voice”, Lippok “limited”himself to fill up the sound spaces with an excellent result. Secondly, it has to be remembered that Einaudi started his artistic-professional ascent abroad: in 1982, in fact, he won a scholarship for a stay at the Tanglewood Festival (USA). Since then many experiences, all under the brand of eclecticism and versatility. Not last, the engagement as a soundtrack composer, where it is possible to express certain musical comments strictly tied to images. Among his works we recall the compositions of original soundtracks such as This is England (2006) by Shane Meadows, which gained a nomination at the BIFA – British Independent Film Awards, Sotto Falso Nome – Under a False Name (2004) – by Roberto Ando’, first prize at the Filmscore Avignon Festival, and Doctor Zhivago (2002) by Giacomo Campiotti, which won a world gold medal at the New York Festivals 2004.
By stressing the great care in studying various musical forms, without any blinkers, it is very pleasant to mention when the Italian composer returned alone on stage and started with a very caressing version of Lady Jane by The Rolling Stones… for passing on, afterwards, to another musical theme in a very natural way.
This is Ludovico Einaudi. The rest is… Divenire (to become)!
Ludovico Einaudi will be back to London on 7th November at the Royal Albert Hall.
