It has just concluded the 2006 edition of the GBOB – Global Battle of the Bands – which has crowned as winners the USA band Heavy Mojo with a prize of $100,000 and a world tour. It was London to host the world final of the contest, and 25 bands from all around the world, on 12th December 2006, alternated on the stage of the Astoria.
Our standard-bearers, winners of the Italian selections, were the Nuumak: a band from Viterbo composed by Manolo Deiana (vocals and guitars), Marco Ronconi (guitars), Bruno Carlini (synthesisers), Fabrizio “Eddy” D’Eletto (bass) and Fabrizio Di Martino (drums). These five very determined guys stood out amongst the many others for being, one more time, to strike a discordant note: with their nu-metal brought a destabilising element in a mainly rock environment and, although they did not gain the victory, what matters more is having been able to shout loud their message. Their scream is that there is something more, that Italian music is not just commercial and soulless pop but there is much ferment struggling to emerge because it can not count on any support but its own – often limited – means. That is why the Nuumak fight and try to get the most from the instrumentations through study, research and experimentation. Despite the fact they had some technical problems on the stage here in London – as it is easy to happen in a festival involving many bands and thus not always able to assure optimum sound check and acoustics to everybody – are in the seventh heaven for having performed at the legendary Astoria and to have been thus rewarded for much hard work. In the Nuumak’s future there is now an album to be finished, a video clip, and most of all lots lots of passion still to invest. Keep tuned, as these five Italian guys do not give in!
